ABOUT US

We are seven Year 3 and 4 students from the NHL Stenden University, studying International Teacher Education for primary schools (ITEps).

All of us are very enthusiastic and excited about the conference and hope that we have created a safe place to talk about human rights and citizenship education in a global context.

These are our goals for the conference:

  • For attendees both inside and outside of the educational context to gain a deeper understanding of Human Rights and citizenship, and how these two major ideas are interconnected.

  • For future educators to gain resources and reflect on how they can implement Human Rights education in their classroom.

  • To have space where attendees can share and exchange their knowledge, perspectives and opinions related to human rights and citizenship.

  • To create and synthesize tools/activities/materials that can be used in the education of Human Rights and citizenship in the classroom.

  • To emphasize the importance of future educators to teach children about their rights and ways to defend them.

  • Encourage critical thinking about paradoxical situations related to human rights/citizenship and differences in culture, religion and norms of countries.

The organising team
Marie Meyer

"As an educator I believe you create a community with your students in which each individual is a valued member. But how do social interactions need to be shaped, how diversity welcomed and how decision-making be designed to achieve this goal? When humans come together, these questions and many more are raised – a challenge leading to the core values we deem important. In line with Ubuntu philosophy, I think all human beings are connected, even stronger, that only through others can I experience my own humanity. It is only natural then, to support the idea of universal Human Rights deeply rooted in my professional identity as a teacher.

Why the conference?

  • Connect – inspire respectful discourse

  • Explore – shed light on the challenges of teaching internationally

  • Create – collaborate to design teaching tools

  • Reflect – on ethical responsibilities of the teaching profession"
